Monitoring open, offshore waters

The challenge

The same water quality monitoring buoy moved from the Dubai Creek marina offshore into open water – capturing how conditions change away from the marina, for a contrasting dataset to the sheltered creek.

Moving a monitoring buoy from a sheltered marina into open water is not simply a change of location. It is a fundamentally different engineering and operational challenge.

In a marina, the environment is relatively controlled. Water depth is predictable, boat traffic follows established patterns, and the buoy is protected from the full force of open-sea conditions.

Out at sea, everything changes: currents are stronger, exposure is greater, mooring loads are higher. In addition, the consequences of a poorly selected site or an underspecified mooring system are more significant.

The approach

Following the completion of Phase 1 at the Creek marina, the same EWQM-1500 buoy – fitted with the Xylem-YSI EXO3 multiparameter sonde – was redeployed into Abu Dhabi open waters.

The site selection process for open-water deployment requires mooring calculations specific to the location: water depth, current loading, chain length and specification, and buoy stability all need to be verified before the system goes in.

Ecocoast’s technical team manages this process from site assessment through to commissioning, part of the marine services Ecocoast provides across the region.

Once deployed, the monitoring program continues identically to Phase 1. Readings every 15 minutes. Data streamed in real time to YSI HydroSphere. Weekly and monthly reports produced by Ecocoast’s environmental team.

What this project delivers

A contrasting dataset to the marina. The value of this deployment is not just what it tells us about open-sea water quality in isolation, but what it reveals when set alongside the Dubai Creek data. The same instrument, the same parameters, the same reporting framework: two very different environments, directly comparable.

Open-sea baselines for the region. Continuous offshore water quality data remains rare in the GCC. This deployment contributes to building a regional picture of what normal looks like in open UAE waters. The seasonal patterns, the temperature profile, the dissolved oxygen behaviour, against which future anomalies or incidents can be assessed.

A test of the full monitoring system in demanding conditions. Open-water deployment pushes the platform harder than a sheltered marina. Sun, salt, current and exposure are more intense. The operational learnings from this phase – on mooring design, buoy stability, maintenance access and waterproofing – directly inform how Ecocoast specifies and deploys systems for clients in similar environments.
