Debris Booms at Ecocoast

Debris booms, also known as river booms, trash booms or containment booms, are floating barriers. They are designed to prevent the spread of floating waste in rivers, lakes, canals, waterways and coastal areas. These barriers effectively trap debris such as leaves, logs, seaweed, plastic and other trash. They help maintain clean and safe water environments, protecting aquatic life and preventing blockages in critical infrastructure like dams, hydroelectric power plants and reservoirs.

We specialize in two types of debris booms: Bolina Permanent Debris Booms and Bolina Log Screen Booms. Both types are durable, efficient and customizable to meet specific needs. Water quality monitoring services are also available to help you assess and maintain compliance with environmental standards. Contact us for expert advice on selecting the right debris boom for your project.

Bolina Permanent Debris Booms

Bolina Permanent Debris Booms for easy containment and recovery of floating debris as a permanent installation.

Setting a benchmark, our debris booms are the only fully flush-faced permanent debris solutions in the market. Their unique design ensures self-clearing at the right current angle. Workboats can smoothly collect materials, eliminating the need for slow ‘nibbling,’ saving time, money and effort on maintenance. Benefit from our detailed engineering services and specialized end connections.

We engineered Europe’s longest floating debris barrier on the Scheldt River in Belgium to improve water quality. The barrier captured 218kg of plastic and debris daily, removing 7 tonnes of waste and pollutants each month.

Bolina Log Screen Booms

Bolina Log Screen Booms

Bolina Log Screen Booms maintain power generation where the amount of floating debris can be exceptional.

The booms play a crucial role in sustaining power generation at major hydroelectric dams across the globe, particularly in instances where the quantity of debris is unusually high.

Mesh screens are joined together to provide a seamless barrier for logs and debris with full articulation between units. Each mesh screen is easily attached to the underside of the booms via specially designed swivel connectors. Customised end connections are also available to allow the boom to follow changing water levels.

FAQS

A debris boom – also known as a trash boom, river boom, containment boom or floating debris barrier – is a floating barrier designed to prevent the spread of floating waste and debris in rivers, lakes, canals, waterways and coastal areas. These barriers effectively trap and contain items such as leaves, logs, seaweed, plastic and other trash, helping maintain clean and safe water environments. Debris booms protect aquatic life, prevent blockages in critical infrastructure like dams and reservoirs, and support environmental compliance by making it easier to collect and remove floating pollutants from the water.

Floating debris booms offer several key advantages for waterway and coastal management:

• Effective debris containment: They trap and prevent the spread of floating waste such as plastic, logs, leaves, seaweed and other trash, helping to keep rivers, lakes, canals and coastal areas clean.
• Protection of critical infrastructure: Debris booms help prevent blockages and damage to dams, hydroelectric plants, water intake screens and reservoirs, reducing the risk of flooding and operational disruptions.
• Improved water quality: By containing and facilitating the removal of pollutants and natural debris, debris booms support cleaner and more potable water environments.
• Reduced maintenance costs: These barriers minimize the time and resources needed for manual debris removal, streamlining maintenance operations and lowering overall costs.
• Environmental protection: By preventing trash and debris from entering sensitive habitats, debris booms help protect aquatic life and support environmental compliance.

The Bolina Permanent Debris Booms and Log Screen Booms are highly effective floating barriers engineered to capture and contain all types of floating waste. Their unique design ensures the boom maintains an optimal vertical position in the water, automatically adjusting to changing water levels and flows for maximum debris capture.

The smooth, flush-faced construction allows floating debris to collect efficiently against the boom without obstruction. This design also enables workboats to easily and quickly collect the accumulated debris, streamlining removal and reducing maintenance time and costs.

Debris booms are widely used in a variety of water environments to contain and control floating waste and debris, including:

● Rivers and lakes: Preventing debris from spreading and affecting water quality.
● Canals and waterways: Containing debris to protect navigation channels and sensitive habitats.
● Coastal areas: Safeguarding shorelines, beaches and marine habitats.
● Ports, harbors and terminals: Ensuring safe, debris-free operations.
● Critical infrastructure sites: Such as dams, hydroelectric power plants, reservoirs, weirs, intake and outlet structures, where accumulated debris can disrupt operations or damage equipment.

Debris booms are also used in nature parks, drinking water catchments and for special projects such as removing invasive plant species or protecting fish passages. Their versatility and durability make them an essential solution for maintaining clean, safe and environmentally compliant waterways.

Ecocoast’s turnkey debris solutions are highly effective because they cover the entire lifecycle of debris management – from custom design and engineering to installation, monitoring, maintenance, removal, relocation and recycling. Our debris booms are engineered for optimal performance and durability, protecting waterways and critical infrastructure from floating debris, trash and pollutants.

What sets Ecocoast apart is our comprehensive approach. We do not just supply products, we deliver end-to-end solutions tailored to each project’s unique requirements. Our team uses advanced design tools and proprietary software to ensure the right product selection and configuration for every site. We also offer debris monitoring and ongoing support to maximize barrier efficiency and environmental impact.

The installation of debris booms is a highly engineered process that starts with a thorough site assessment. Our engineering team typically provides clients with a detailed questionnaire and, when necessary, conducts onsite evaluations to gather essential data. Key factors considered include water flow velocity, direction, seasonal variations, wind speed, wave action, debris type and volume and site-specific challenges such as the presence of critical infrastructure or fluctuating water levels.

Based on this assessment, the optimal boom type, length, configuration and anchoring system are determined. Engineering calculations are performed to ensure the boom can withstand expected loads from water currents and debris impact, using data on flow rates and site conditions. Anchoring options are selected according to geotechnical parameters and local equipment capabilities.

During installation, boom sections are assembled and connected using robust end connectors and ballast chains are attached for stability. The boom is then positioned in the water and anchored securely to withstand environmental forces and maximize debris capture. For complex or critical sites, custom engineering drawings and installation plans are provided to ensure precise placement and optimal performance.

This rigorous, engineering-driven approach ensures that debris booms are not only effective in containing floating waste, but also durable and reliable in protecting water quality and critical infrastructure.

Our debris booms and oil booms serve different primary functions and are built from materials suited to their roles. Our debris booms are engineered for long-term containment and efficient collection of floating debris in rivers, dams and reservoirs. Their fully flush-faced design allows for self-clearing at optimal current angles and is constructed from heavy-duty, UV-stabilized materials to withstand continuous exposure and minimize maintenance needs.
In contrast, our oil booms are specifically designed to contain and control oil spills in various water environments such as ports, harbors and industrial sites. These booms are made from UV-stabilized PVC membrane fabric, with options like foam-filled or solid flotation for superior buoyancy and rapid deployment.

Choosing the right boom depends on factors like the type of debris or pollutant, water flow, site conditions and your project goals. Our team of engineers simplifies this process by guiding you through a detailed questionnaire and, if needed, conducting an onsite assessment to evaluate environmental conditions and specific requirements. With our expertise and experience, we recommend the most effective and durable boom solution, customized to your site, to ensure optimal performance and protection for your waterways and critical infrastructure.
