Case Study: Creating a Beach at Anantara Desert Islands Resort

Anantara Desert Islands Resort in Abu Dhabi faced challenges creating a beach due to its exposed location and rocky reef. Previous attempts failed and waves were breaking onto the pool’s retaining wall. Initial plans for a rock fringing breakwater would impact the reef and obstruct ocean views.

We proposed a low-crested segmented breakwater using sand-filled Ecobag Coastal Protection Tubes. Over 80 tubes, each 25m long and filled with local sand, were used, avoiding the need for extensive rock quarrying and transportation. This eco-friendly alternative minimized the impact on sensitive habitat areas and provided a safer and visually appealing solution.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island now boasts a sandy beach protected by an eco-friendly reef. The low-crested reef, designed to mimic natural fringing reefs, not only prevents wave impact but also fosters algae growth and provides a habitat for fish and crustaceans. The transformation aligns with the island’s conservation ethos, offering guests a unique and sustainable beach experience.
