Case Study: Installing a Temporary Retaining Wall for Beach Protection During Construction

Bluewaters Island in Dubai faced erosion issues during construction, threatening ongoing projects. We were tasked with installing a temporary retaining wall along 500 meters of beach for 2-3 years. The goal was to prevent erosion, protect temporary structures and ensure cost-effective and quick installation and removal.

We used 1,800 sand-filled geosynthetic containers, Ecobag Coastal Protection Containers, to create a robust erosion protection wall. This solution saved costs and prevented constant beach nourishment during construction, addressing the ongoing erosion challenge.

Three years after construction, we removed the temporary erosion protection wall, modified existing rock groynes and reused sand from the Ecobag Coastal Protection Containers for beach profiling and nourishment. Some containers were repurposed as an impermeable barrier along rock groynes to prevent sand migration. Sand screening reduced debris, leaving properly graded sand. Remaining geotextile was responsibly disposed of.

The project transformed Bluewaters Island’s beach into a 5-star experience, with effective wave protection. The beach remains iconic due to groynes and a submerged beach toe preventing sand loss. Regular maintenance ensures Bluewaters Island stays one of Dubai’s top beaches, adding value for the managing body.
