Case Study: Protecting Marine Ecosystems and Facilitating Construction Access

The Marine Life Institute located in the Triple Bay Marina, at the ultra-luxury destination, AMAALA, on the Red Sea coastline of Saudi Arabia faced a challenge. They needed a temporary structure from geosynthetic containers to protect the sensitive marine area near Hijaz Island for 4 years. The solution had to be eco-friendly, strong, cost-effective and quickly removable after construction. The original design provided was not suitable and the main contractor lacked experience with geosynthetic containers.

We redesigned the structure using our Geoforce software, ensuring it met all project requirements. We selected the right materials, manufacturing 23,398 units of sand-filled geosynthetic containers called Ecobag Coastal Protection Containers. These containers had two layers with UV-stabilized fibers for durability and met strength and water permeability standards. Since the contractor lacked experience, we provided training and supervision during installation in Saudi Arabia.

The construction on Al Hijaz Island is progressing smoothly, thanks to our temporary protection structure. It effectively safeguards the marine area and the access-way, allowing uninterrupted construction. Our expertise in geosynthetic containers and hands-on support ensured the success of this project. We are proud to showcase how such containers can protect infrastructure, people and the environment.
