FAQS

An oil boom, or oil spill containment boom, is a floating barrier placed on water to contain and control oil spills. By surrounding or diverting oil, it keeps spills confined, protects sensitive marine zones, and makes cleanup – such as skimming – easier and more effective.

Oil booms are deployed wherever there is a risk of oil entering waterways, including:
● Ports and harbors (to protect berths and marinas).
● Pipeline and intake structures (to safeguard water intakes).
● Desalination and petrochemical terminals (to shield critical infrastructure).
● Coastal, inshore, nearshore and offshore zones (depending on boom design).

Ecocoast offers five main types, each designed for specific environmental and operational needs:

Bolina Harbour Oil Booms – Heavy-duty, foam-filled floats with stainless-steel hinges, ideal for long-term use in ports and terminals.
Ecobarrier Solid Flotation Oil Booms – Made from UV-stabilized PVC, these versatile booms are suitable for general use in a range of water conditions.
Ecobarrier Fence Oil Booms – Flat-panel design with closed-cell floats, best for static or low-current sites.
Ecobarrier Inflatable Oil Booms –Air-inflated for quick emergency response and easy storage, perfect for rapid deployment in spill situations.
Ecobarrier Beach Sealing Oil Booms – Air-inflated PVC/TPU fabric designed to seal shorelines and shallow waters, preventing oil from reaching sensitive coastal areas.

Yes, many Ecocoast oil booms are designed for multiple deployments. After use, these booms can be cleaned and redeployed or relocated, thanks to their durable construction and high-quality materials like UV-stabilized PVC and high-tenacity PVC/TPU3. This robust design allows them to withstand repeated handling, environmental exposure, and maintenance cycles.

Oil booms are made up of flotation elements, tension members, ballast, skirts, freeboard, and various fittings. The skirt, or draft, prevents oil from escaping underneath the boom in low current conditions, while shallow draft skirts help reduce tension on the boom. These combined components ensure effective containment and stability in a range of water environments.

Key factors to consider include site conditions (such as waves, wind and currents), location, installation period, whether the boom will be moored or towed, its performance characteristics (like wave response and material strength), and convenience features such as ease of handling, cleaning and storage.

Ecocoast oil booms can be integrated with other marine pollution control measures as part of a comprehensive spill response strategy. Prior to deployment, we support clients with engineering-based spill response plans. Oil booms serve as the first line of defense by containing and concentrating oil, making it easier for additional solutions – such as skimmers, sorbents or dispersants – to be deployed within the confined area. Our monitoring buoys can continuously track water quality and hydrocarbon levels, providing real-time data to guide response actions and assess environmental impact.

Ecocoast offers comprehensive support services for oil boom solutions, including expert design and engineering with tools like a proprietary force calculator, professional installation using own workboats and precise deployment planning. We provide post-deployment monitoring and routine maintenance to ensure optimal performance. We supply response containers for transporting and storing oil booms on reels, such as the inflatable types, as well as blowers for inflating booms. Recycling options are also available at the end of the boom’s operational life.
