Plastic Pollution Solutions

This week, we mark two of the most important dates for our planet: World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8). In 2025, these global observances are united by a common mission – ending plastic pollution. They also focus on sustaining the natural wonders that support all life on Earth.

At Ecocoast, protecting marine environments from debris and pollution has been at the core of what we do since day one. These global awareness days reaffirm our commitment to going beyond products – offering turnkey plastic pollution solutions that make a proven environmental impact.

#BEATPLASTICPOLLUTION: OUR LEGACY OF DEBRIS CONTROL

This year’s World Environment Day theme – #BeatPlasticPollution – couldn’t be more aligned with our mission. Long before it became a global call-to-action, we were already leading efforts to intercept plastic and natural debris. We did this by installing debris booms in waterways to stop pollution at the source.

Ecocoast's Road to COP28: Tees BarrageBack in 2001, we launched our longest-running debris control project: Supplying Bolina Permanent Debris Booms to the Tees Barrage in the United Kingdom (UK). Over the years, this system intercepted over 1,000 tons of debris. It prevented plastic and organic waste from flowing down the River Tees and harming marine life.

These debris booms were recently replaced after 20 years of continuous operation. This is a true testament to their durability and environmental value. Read the case study.

From logs and branches to floating plastic waste, our booms stop harmful debris, maintaining navigation, protecting infrastructure and supporting the environmental health of this river system.

Global partnerships for cleaner waterways

Ecocoast at The Ocean Cleanup launch🌊 The Ocean Cleanup: Supporting early innovation

We supported the early stages of The Ocean Cleanup’s mission by designing custom screens for System 001. We also supplied Bolina Permanent Debris Booms for their early Interceptor models — helping extract large volumes of plastic waste directly from rivers.

The screen for System 001, designed and manufactured in the UAE, was rigorously tested. It was then deployed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch as part of the world’s first large-scale ocean cleanup system (source: Gulf News). Our Founders, Lachlan Jackson and Dana Liparts, were invited and present at the launch of the system in San Francisco.

Ichthion debris boom partnership Ecuador🇪🇨 Ecuador: Ichthion & the Azure System

Our debris control solutions also support efforts to capture and remove massive amounts of plastic waste from South American waterways. In Ecuador, we partnered with Ichthion to combat river-based plastic pollution.

Their Azure System – installed in the Portoviejo River – uses our Bolina Permanent Debris Booms to direct waste to an extraction point. From there, a conveyor transfers debris to shore for sorting and recycling. Outfitted with sensors, the Azure System also collects valuable data on waste types and volumes, informing smarter policymaking and waste strategies. The initiative is part of the Clean Currents Coalition, working to stop plastic pollution at its source before it reaches the ocean.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka: CEFAS-led initiative in collaboration with NARA

In 2024, we supplied a 130m-long Bolina Permanent Debris Boom (2.5 tonnes) for a UK-backed initiative on the Ja-Ela River (originally planned for the Kelani). Led by our client, the UK’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), the system is capturing surface and sub-surface debris. This is improving local livelihoods and reducing plastic pollution in Colombo’s waterways.

Beyond booms: Smart monitoring & turnkey solutions

Our commitment goes further than interception alone. We offer a full suite of environmental solutions to beat plastic pollution:

1. Debris booms & barriers: Proven long-lasting protection, engineered for performance.
2. Water Quality Monitoring buoys (WQM): Debris monitoring with real-time data.
3. Water quality reports: Supporting compliance and environmental goals.
4. Marine services including onsite boom installation teams.
5. CSR & ESG impact documentation: Quantifying plastic waste removed, carbon impact reduced and community benefits delivered.

Whether for ports, rivers or marine reserves, we provide a turnkey solution: Product, service and proof of impact – all in one.

Industry leadership & Influence

As pioneers in debris interception technology, we’re proud that our Bolina Permanent Debris Booms have set industry benchmarks. They’ve demonstrated outstanding performance and durability, helping shape best practices worldwide. Our solutions have inspired similar approaches in high-profile projects targetting plastic pollution.

While recognition comes in many forms, our focus remains on delivering proven results. We create measurable environmental impact for cleaner rivers and oceans, working directly with clients or though third parties like non-profits.

WORLD OCEANS DAY 2025: SUSTAINING WHAT SUSTAINS US

This year’s World Oceans Day theme, “Sustaining What Sustains Us”, reminds us why we do what we do. Oceans are the foundation of all life, connecting us, supporting economies and inspiring innovation. As we tackle plastic pollution, we remain grounded in our responsibility to protect the ocean’s wonder for current and future generations.

Life Below Water: Geosynthetics for coastal protection

Our solutions also support UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, by preserving biodiversity and advancing sustainable development.

Our geosynthetic containers – also known as geotextile tubes or geotubes – are designed to protect shorelines from erosion and storm impacts. In addition, they enhance underwater biodiversity. When placed on the seabed, these containers dissipate wave energy to protect the shoreline.

They also provide stable, complex surfaces for marine species like fish, soft corals and kelp to thrive. Functioning as artificial reefs, they offer shelter, breeding grounds and food sources – restoring marine habitats and supporting ecological balance in vulnerable coastal zones.

A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PLANET

As we observe World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, we’re reminded that the fight against plastic pollution and the protection of our oceans go hand-in-hand. At Ecocoast, we’re proud to be part of the global movement, delivering real-world solutions with real environmental impact.
