On World Nature Conservation Day: How Ecocoast Is Tackling Plastic Pollution
Tackling plastic pollution

Today, World Nature Conservation Day is reminding us that protecting our natural ecosystems isn’t just a priority – it’s a responsibility. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to our oceans, coastlines and communities.

At Ecocoast, our mission goes beyond developing innovative marine and coastal protection solutions. We’re actively working to reduce plastic pollution in a multifaceted way. We remove it at the source. We also intercept it before it reaches the ocean. And we restore ecosystems that naturally defend against it.

Here’s how we’re doing it:

Removing & Reducing Plastics at the Source

Our proactive approach begins by targeting pollution at its very origin. By pushing for EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) reduction and removal in our product designs – one of the most persistent and harmful plastic pollutants in marine environments – we’re directly decreasing the volume of plastics destined for landfill and waterways. And we’re not stopping there. More about EPS-free Ecobarrier Silt Curtains.

In parallel, we’re working closely with municipalities and authorities to advocate for sustainable alternatives and push for regulations that eliminate plastic-heavy materials and practices from coastal and marine environments, amplifying our impact at the policy level.

Preventing Plastics from Reaching the Sea

All rivers lead to the sea. That’s exactly why we’re focusing upstream. By partnering with not-for-profits, government entities and community organisations, we’re deploying debris booms in strategic waterways. These barriers have proven to intercept significant volumes of floating debris, protecting marine ecosystems and coastal economies alike.

This collaborative model is one we strongly believe in: Practical solutions deployed hand-in-hand with partners to maximise impact.

Global Impact Through Partnerships Against Plastic Pollution

We collaborate with global partners to deliver engineered solutions that make a measurable impact. A few highlights:

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka – Ja-Ela River: In partnership with Cefas, NARA and local stakeholders, we supplied over 130 metres of custom-engineered Bolina Permanent Debris Booms to protect vital river systems. More here.

🇳🇱 The Netherlands – Rotterdam’s Keilehaven: Working with Noria, we designed and delivered 80+ metres of debris booms integrated with their CirCleaner system, which collects up to 3 cubic meters of waste per week using solar power and tidal adaptation. More here.

🇮🇩 Indonesia – Jakarta & Beyond: The first Interceptor river cleanup prototype by The Ocean Cleanup, featuring Bolina Permanent Debris Booms, was tested in the Netherlands in 2017. After successful trials, it was deployed in Jakarta, Indonesia.

🇪🇨 Ecuador – Portoviejo River: In the Ichthion project, our adaptable debris booms support the Azure system by accommodating strong tidal variations and integrating with sensor technology and local waste value chains. More here.

🇧🇪 Belgium – Scheldt River: Partnering with DEME, we installed Europe’s longest floating debris barrier (278m), capturing up to 7 tonnes of plastic per month with support from AI cameras, autonomous vessels and CO₂-neutral operations. More here.

Restoring Ecosystem Services

Plastic pollution doesn’t just affect the water we swim in. It damages the ecosystems that act as natural buffers and cleaners.

We’re investing in solutions that restore biodiversity and habitat health, because nature itself is one of the most effective tools in the fight against pollution. Some of our reef-mimicking technologies have been shown to increase microbial diversity, which in turn can enhance natural microbial degradation of plastics.

Healthy coastal ecosystems like reefs, mangroves and seagrasses do more than support marine life. They help trap micro- and nano-plastics, acting as buffers against pollution and increasing overall ecosystem resilience.

Our Commitment to Ocean Health

🌊 On this World Nature Conservation Day, we’re doubling down on our commitment to nature-led innovation. We know that resilient, diverse ecosystems are more stable in the face of stressors like plastic pollution. By combining direct action, preventative strategies and ecological restoration, we offer a holistic blueprint to protect and restore ocean health.

Together with our partners and communities, we’re setting ambitious new benchmarks for sustainability. We’re proud to be leading the way in building safer, cleaner and more sustainable coastlines and waterways.
